  1. BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--Portugal might need to take further steps to cut its budget deficit, the European Commission said Wednesday.

Portugal, which had a budget deficit worth an estimated 9.3% of gross domestic product last year, aims to bring its deficit below 3% by 2013.

The commission, the European Union's executive arm, said there are risks to this plan, particularly if Portugal's economy doesn't grow as quickly the government expects this year.

"Additional measures of fiscal consolidation might be needed, especially for this year, if risks to the macroeconomic and fiscal developments materialize," European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn said in a statement.

  2. London is full of gossip this morning with traders saying stops placed above 1.37 are huge. Some are thinking that the Greece problem can be put on the backburner for a little while so shorts maybe in for a good old fashioned squeeze at some stage.

Looking ahead Bernanke speaks tonight et al other Fed members plus we have four S&P companies reporting earnings including JPMorgan. On the data front we have US CPI and retail sales for March (1230GMT) plus business inventories for Feb (1400GMT).

I have no real firm views but I would expect Mr Bernanke to remain dovish as usual.

Traders are suggesting an Asia central bank has been seen buying GBP/USD from just below the figure. Nothing untoward here, it happens nearly every day with Asian c/b’s buying US Dollars in order to keep the local currency weak then recycle the (unwanted) US Dollars into Euro, GBP, AUD etc.

Reuters is now reporting that Israel’s c/bank has intervened to the tune of $500mln this morning – I wonder what they are going to do with their unwanted US Dollars!

Australia Consumer Sentiment Index -1.0% In Apr Vs Mar

  5. NEW YORK, April 13 - ABC News said on Tuesday its

weekly index of U.S. consumer confidence fell in the latest

week as Americans continued to shift between positive and

negative views of the national economy and remained hesitant to

    spend.

The ABC Consumer Comfort Index fell to -47 for the week to

April 11, from -43 the previous week. The gauge has been

trapped in a 9-point range so far this year.

The current reading matches the index's 2010 average, while

the prior report showed the second-highest level for the gauge

    so far this year.

But the survey still remains close to a level of -48, the

average for 2009, which was its worst year on record.

The index hit an all-time low of -54 in the week to Dec. 1,

2008, and then again in the week to Jan. 25, 2009, and has not

been in positive territory since March 2007.

  7. So what have we learned?

    April 13, 2010 at 19:22 GMT

Almost two full trading sessions are in the books since the EU-IMF aid deal for Greece was fleshed out further. What have we learned?

    * We learned that Greece has the ability to place small amounts if dent for short periods of time at very high rates of interest.

    * We learned that Germany is still reluctant to come up with any concrete aid and would very much like to see the Greek debt situation hurry up and fix itself before elections roll around.

    * We learned that tress don;t grow to the sky. AUD and Oil have been retrenching so far this week, not so much on risk aversion as on prices reaching levels where few could justify further purchases.

To my mind, we still have not learned whether EUR/USD is headed any higher any time soon or whether we’ve merely squeezed shorts in at bad levels. Hopefully we will learn more on that score in the days ahead.

Cum fac ca sa pierd bani in FX ?

  12. Geithner: Economy in better shape now

    April 13, 2010 at 17:18 GMT

US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner says the US economy is in much better shape thanks to actions taken by our wise and benevolent leader to mitigate the financial crisis. There is still a terrible mess to deal with before the economy is back to normal, he says.

Markets are in quiet ranges after a very choppy morning. Cable is showing particular weakness after earlier getting a boost from a narrower-than expected trade deficit. It trades at 1.5357 down from a high of 1.5448 in early New York trade.
